This has not been a problem with any computers sold by Sherline-only when connecting the Sherline driver box to a computer with a parallel port of unknown quality. Just thought Id add a reminder that USB stands for Universal Serial Bus and thus a lot of things like CNC and Instron machines that run on Parallel ports are not compatible. The parallel port is nothing more than a serial to parallel shift register.Once the register is loaded, the enable pin is set and all the data is paralleled out at the same time. A symptom that occurs when this happens is that one or more stepper motors may suddenly change direction, run in only one direction or act erratically in other ways. Also, the signal may decrease with the age of the computer or when it gets overheated. Signal output through the parallel port on computers should be about 3 volts, but some poorly made cards and connectors may put out only a marginal signal.
